Some of us have very fond memories of thermal runaway in Ge transistors. A great motivation to learn how things worked, that was.
Modern devices developed and replaced others for a reason, yes.

Your sketch of a pcb shows the output shorted to the DC input. Then the shunt resistor is discharging the DC input.

the low voltage input appears with the high voltage output, I couldn't work out how to get that out of it, its an issue.

The shunt resistor has a capacitor before it, blocking it, its supposed to short.
The purpose of the shunt is to make the series connection have resistors either side so it zags through better, without leaking out the sides? otherwise it would just be a pure short.
