Usual suspects (mouser, small parts, mcmaster carr) no got.

There is no reason such critters should exist.

1/4"-40????? No! 1/4" 20! UNF. 1/4" 16 UNC.
4-40 UNC, 4-56 UNF. All standard.
Syntax error. Parsing error. Reality check error.

No, the big skinny ones that mount pots and rotary switchex by their shaft
bushings.

---
No, those are usually 3/8-32 and are also use the same thread as
threaded military BNC panel mount connectors. Also used in some
incandescent lamp mounting hardware, although that seems to be
moving to 1/8" pipe.
---
I seem to have found something in 15/32-32:
http://www.tubeampparts.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=A&Category_Code=SNB
scroll down about 2/3 page - they've got one called "Knurled switch nut,
15/32-32", for $0.50, and one called "Hex switch nut, 15/32-32", for
$0.25 .

---
Those are used typically to panel-mount standard size toggle
switches.
---
These look very much like the ones I believe OP is talking about; usually
they come with the part.

---
About the only thing they have in common is that they're hex nuts.

1/4-40 is used on miniature pots and toggle switches (usually
American) which have 1/4" panel mounting bushings

Those are machine screw nuts; that's not what OP is looking for.

Hve you ever seen a control panel nut? An Alcoswitch? A phone jack?

These are large ID (relatively), thin, fine-thread nuts.

I misread it at first and found some 15/32-32s, but then
realized that 15/32 is almost 2X 1/4, duh.

But Alcoswitch definitely springs to mind, and mini pots and
rotary switches and stuff.

Cheers!

It has been a while since i installed potentiometers or 1/4" "phone" jacks.
memory fades. If i had seen 9/16-40 i might have remembered sooner.
"panel control nuts" seems to give the best resuts in Google.
