My homemade heating mantle doesn't work properly

Recently made a heating mantle which looks like this:

The dimmer doesn't work in this circuit and hardly regulates the current. The wire heats up abnormally fast as if 20A was going through it which is probably what is happening. Do i need to supply the dimmer with 4 amps it is rated for, or will it take only 4 amps from the wall outlet?

Asking a 4A device to supply 20A is a recipe for disaster. What is the resistance of the wire?

Try the dimmer with a 100W bulb. Does it still work?

The device works when I triple the resistance, thanks everybody who posted
