Magnetic Pickup Unit (MPU)

Hi Guys

Saw an engine that had an MPU on the Flywheel. The thing is that this MPU has three wires. I haven't seen MPU's with three wires before nether do i understand what the third one is for ?. Any idea of the purpose ?

Can be a plain stepper motor driven as generator. They are three phase.

Its probably a Hall sensor. The 3 pins will be .... +V, signal out and GND
