Looking for fireplace cover

I have been unable to locate a cover for my fireplace. I am looking
for a soft cover with a magnetic strip around the edge to seal
my metal fireplace when it is not being used. Has anyone seen
such a thing? Where?

I never saw anything like what you describe, but it sounds like it would be
easy enough to make your own.

On my fireplace, I put an aluminum cap on the top of the chimney. The cap
has a spring loaded
door, and a chain hangs down the chimney that you use to open and close the
cap. It was relatively easy
to install, as long as you are not fearful of climbing on your roof.

It was about $70 about maybe 15 years ago. It eliminated all drafts, winter
cold, and aromatic
summer downdrafts from the chimney. It also makes it easier to get a draft
going, because
most of the time the door is closed and the air in the flue is not exposed
to extreme cold.
This model seals very well.

It is one of the best little products I ever purchased. Can't remember the
brand name but I think
that Brookstone sold a version of it.

Except for the incovenient tendancy of permanent magnets to lose their

Hmm, must be one of the trolls spoofing Dave's name - the real Dave Hinz
would actually have read the part about "not being used" and know this
does not matter for the application....

An idea for you. I took 1/2" angle iron screwed it in all around the
fireplace. Got 4" foamboard and painted it dark and stuck magnet tape
on the foamboard. My house is much warmer in winter . The Plug pops in
and out easily and seals out drafts and heat loss. All for apx 30$

I also have the close able chimney cap on a wire. It doesn`t compare to
my home made Plug for heat loss rediction and I paid 250$ installed

Well, I guess it depends on how cool it is when the cover is put on,
doesn't it? I pictured this as "OK, fire is out, let's cover it up".
If he means "I'm not going to use it this week", then that's different.
Just something to watch out for.
