Insignia is-pd040922 7" portable dvd player with "no disk"

Ray

have an Insignia is-pd040922 7" portable dvd player with "no disk" problem
on all video dvd's.
Have cleaned the lens, cleaned the sliding mechanism with no help.

Tried with an Audio CD and this works fine, so probably lets out the above
causes, as well as the spindle motor
Searching on google finds hundreds of similar complaints about Insignia
..
Does the CD use the same laser and lens as the dvd ?
Would appreciate any other ideas to try before I give up on this machine

"Ray"...
Does the CD use the same laser and lens as the dvd ?

** CDs use an infra-red laser while DVDs use a visible red one.

758nm as compared to 657 nm.

Thanks Phil...

I guess these lasers must be integrated into the same lens, cause I cant see
2 different optical units..

Here is a reference circuit for a Cheertek chipset:

You can see the pinout of a Hitachi HOP-1200W optical pickup at the
top of page 3. Notice that there are separate pins for the DVD and CD
laser diodes (DVDLD and CDLD).

Thanks Frances

I found what looks to be the same assembly as mine on ebay

http://www.ebay.ca/itm/170696204492?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

Do you think it would work without much adjusting ? Everything looks fixed
except
for 2 little round things on the side of the pickup that might be pots,
except
I dont see a screwdriver slot. Looking at your diagram I cant spot any
adjustments

for only about $10 it might be worth trying

I used the Hitachi pickup as a general example that illustrates the
point that there are two laser diodes in a DVD player. I have no idea
what kind of pickup is actually used in your unit.

BTW, it's "Franc", originally pronounced as in Franz, but pronounced
as "Frank" when anglicised. And Frances is a female name -- Francis is
male. :)

Sorry Franc, I guess I didnt think about this being an international
group... Need to be more careful...

Actually I did not use your info to look up the pickup. Thats a coincidence

I had already googled the part number on the pickup which is
5f28046446e61200 which eventually led me to the ebay unit which looks
identical to mine, so I guess the question still is "If this is the right
Pickup would it require complicated adjustment, or is there a reasonable
chance it would just work ? " I'm willing to gamble if the chances are at
least 50 50, just for the experience.

I don't trust anything on eBay, but that may be just my paranoia.

That said, I believe the unit should just drop in. I haven't ever
changed a DVD pickup (they've always been uneconomically priced), but
CD pickups have a solder blob that protects the assembly from ESD
during transit. This blob needs to be removed.

Perhaps someone else could advise you.

I ordered the part.... The seller has 100 percent good feedback, and sells
all types of pickups.

Will report when I get it..

The part came from Hong Kong, no problems.. took about 2 weeks

NEW HITACHI CD DVD Laser Lens Head Optical HOP-1200W HOP-1200W-B US

I installed it, and first try with an audio cd worked ok. but..
a dvd video would not work. but I noticed it searched around longer than
before. but eventually still "no disk"
I googled around and found a data sheet for this pickup, and found there
were 2 adjustment pots on the pickup, One for the dvd pickup and one for the
cd pickup. Kept adjusting the dvd pot in small increments, and now I am
watching video.

Now I wonder if I had adjusted the old head, if it would have worked.
