I need help with my first flyback converter

A meter is probably not fast enough. If you had it on the current range you did the wrong thing anyway -- although it may have measured current.

You need to use an oscilloscope so you can see the waveform and determine the peaks with some precision.

At 4.4A, the 1 ohm resistor drops 4.4V. This is almost certainly enough to reduce the current significantly. And this is why I suggested 0.1 ohm. ten 1 ohm resistors in parallel would be one way to do it.

As for the previous message, it's no so much that the inductor can "charge" faster or slower ("charge" isn't the right word), since it happens at exactly the same rate. The inductor with the higher peak current can store more energy, so at the same rate of increase (which is determined by the voltage and the inductance) you can continue for longer.

I would recommend that you use the 5A inductor if you're seeing a peak of 4.4A, although I'm not certain how accurate that measurement is.
