I have a celestial 5188I rear projection tv and it keeps switching off at random .

I have a celestial rear projection tv model hp5188I that keeps switching off at random. I thought it could be getting hotas I would wait for five or ten minutes and switch it back on. It's slowly gotten worse and now runs for about ten minutes then switches off.

Probably the power supply. Most comin is bad capacitors. You can try replacing the caps or look for a power supply on the web. Usually go reasonably cheap.

That would probably be a good indication to not use it anymore...
If you car's tire fell off every 500K would you risk driving it? You're likely to be able to get from point A - B... but the point remains that using faulty equipment can be a hazard.
How are you with electronics? What kind of test equipment do you own?
Are you familiar (even remotely) with the innards of a television set?
There are some lethal voltages in there that can persist *after* unplugging it from the wall. If you want to continue and attempt a repair yourself, let us know.
Otherwise, wheel it to a local repair shop and get a quote.

You wouldn't have some stray "rf" signals going through the area that turns off the set like a remote control, would you? That, of course, depends on the type of remote you are using. Back in the 50's, I had a customer with a Zenith that was randomly changing channels and shutting off. Turned out to be a singing caged canary in her house. She thought I was crazy until we moved the canary upstairs.
I don't think THIS is your problem but thought a bit of humor would not hurt.
I think you have a higher than normal current consumption problem that shuts down the P.S. May require sending it to a repairman if you can find one, especially one that works on the old rear projection types. May not even be worth repairing. Good luck! Ed.
