HUGE electricity increase - help!

Geez! It looks like she had very serious problems *before* the recent
near-doubling. Based on what you've written, and assuming some
innovation on the pool and water heating, I would have thought that
the solar setup might have been able to power the whole place. Anyway,
one competent guy with a clamp meter should be able to sort out the
worst of it in a single day. The solar installer seems like the
logical guy to have figured out that mess, have you talked to him?

Wayne
Yes I have, he is in agreement, but the owner is bringing in an outside
electrician now. I suggested this after she saw that the meter showed
about a 1000 Watt drain with all circuit breakers off! She found this
out by turning them off herself, she does have multiple sub panels, and
she claims she also had their breakers turned off. Her electrician is
coming this Saturday, I would prefer yesterday.

Jim Baber replies:

That could be bad news..
PG&E Probably slipped in a power factor adjustment. That could be
a killer..

see
http://www.pge.com/biz/understanding_bill/large_biz/page3.html
Check out Item 25..
This was done
You/They should have checked their loads before asking for TOU meter.
TOU has no bearing
I.E. Manually read the meter at specified times and log the data.

Progressive hot water leak?? (Check it first thing in the morning.. if
the hot water pipe 4ft away from heater is hot to the touch.. you've
got a leak..) (Leaks under the slab can be a real problem.. )
This is going to be done. I had suggest it earlier as well as checking
out the Temp / Pressure relief valve for leaks
What size?? Do they have an extra installation wrap??
(Why two water heaters?, Do they use that much hot water? )

Oh.. Check the time on TOU CLOCK's.. They typically have the wrong
time, since most timers shift their settings each time the power fails.

Lastly.. Do them a favor and Install some solar water heater(s) &
mixing valves.
Good idea, but not until basic problems are corrected, these water
heaters less than 2 yr. old and are energy star..
How many ceiling fans???
9, but not used in winter (now) and only when room occupied in summer.
how big?? How fast are they spinning??
30 ", unknown
Have you measured their power consumption??

no

Are their blades cleaned on a regular basis??
yes, clean now?
Have you consider replacing them?

I.E.. Energy star ceiling fans have a 50% advantage over older
conventional ceiling fans.

http://www.energystar.gov/index.cfm?c=ceiling_fans.pr_ceiling_fans
http://www.energystar.gov/ia/products/prod_lists/ceiling_fans_only_prod_list.pdf
(The higher CFM per watt, the better. But as you can see from the .pdf
chart.. CFM per watt drops by factor of 2 to 3 times at highest speed
settings. It might pay off to lower the fan heights so they can be
more effectively operated at lower speeds..)

Or try some fans from these people..

Hmmm.. 3 loads per day.. is that an Electric Dryer???
Yes, line dried in good weather - 300 days a year
Get a front loading washing machine...
It is, and is 2 months old. Same for dryer.
Frigidaire makes several decent
models. Uses 1/3 of water required by a top loader, and the final
spin cycle kicks in a extra high speed. The high speed final spin
cycle, extracts even more of the water out of the laundry. Less water
remaining == reduced drying time.
Thanks for assistance

Thank for the tip. Unfortunately I can't take it. People with high blood
pressure and who have had a stroke or heart attack should not take it. I
also can't take most other pain meds. What they have me on now is Neurotin
which helps some but it is primarily to help with my seizures and they can't
increase the dose due to other meds that I have to take.

Even assuming that 1kW drain is real rather than the result of
forgetting about a sub panel or some such, it's still waaaaay short of
explaining things. It would take about 6 of those just to account for
the recent increase, never mind the high use in the past. Good idea to
have somebody new come in. You might get a head start on lining up yet
another guy though in case Mr. Saturday is one of those "ceiling fans
don't use much" kinda' electricians.

I gotta' say I'm a little surprised about the solar contractor. I know
it's not really his job, but I'd expect that after collecting what,
$40k? that he'd be over there with bells on.

Yes it is an amino acid. Not everyone can handle everything. I not only had
heard about it before, but also looked it up to make sure it is the same
thing. Look at the precautions listed at
http://pdrhealth.com/drug_info/nmdrugprofiles/nutsupdrugs/dlp_0095.shtml. It
plainly says that you should use caution if you are hypertensive (high blood
pressure). According to my VA Primary Care Provider at the time if you have
high blood pressure and you have had a stroke or heart attack it is
dangerous. That would agree with the PDR. Further look at the other drugs
that you are not supposed to take with it. One of the class of drugs that
you are not supposed to take with this is the Neuroleptic drugs like
Risperdal which I was prescribed for PTSD. Taking the two of them together
will cause problems.

It is unfortunate that many people believe that because something is
natural, herbal, or that it comes from a food source that it is perfectly
safe. Nothing could be further from the truth. Many people have died from
this mistaken belief. It is one thing to get a very small dosage in your
food. It is another to take enough of it that it you could use it as a
medicine.

Did you research it or just guess it was another med? It is an amino
acid.

Plenty of meds are amino acids.

Her power bill was higher than she was comfortable with, so she
contracted with a local Solar PV installer to install a 5.3 kW solar
system to lower her billings. When the system was turned on last
November, PG&E replaced the original meter with a new Time Of Use
meter, at the customer's request.

The problem? The wattage billed went way up

Well, other than the usual (are you sure it went up, or had she been
getting a free ride before due to a broken meter?), and checking for
power consumption, I'd check to make sure the meter actually runs
backwards when the sun is shining and all her appliances are turned
off. [These new-fangled meters can be programmed to, for instance,
count up no matter which way the power is flowing...]
Thanks for your ideas, the old meter did run appropriately and the new
one does run backward.

Yeah, then she's got something stuck on, and the new solar power
system is just a red herring. Let us know what her electrician finds.

There is a difference. When the computer enters "Hibernate" mode,
it stores the contents of RAM memory to a special file on the hard
disk (and there must be sufficient free space, or it won't hibernate),
then shuts off. Upon restarting, the boot process checks to see if
there is a valid hibernate file, and if so, it simply loads that to memory
and starts where you left off. This avoids having to run through a
lengthy series of program startups and dramatically shortens
the boot process.

Sometimes, however, it may be necessary to go through the
entire startup process, especially when installing certain
programs - or if it looses power unexpectedly!

Ours is set to restart on power loss. If power is removed during
hibernation it still wakes up normally. That's how we run our other
computers - normal routine is to press the sleep key (which is set to
hibernate in power options), and after the hibernate info writes, we
cut off power to everything via a single switch on a power strip.

The question is, how exactly does Media Center Edition wake up the
machine. I read somewhere that it uses the task scheduler. IIRC, I
tested that first to verify that it could wake the computer from any
mode (I need to verify that I guess). Yet when MCE has an event
scheduled, the computer will wake from hibernate but not from "off".
It's a minor issue, normal routine is hibernation anyway, but it's
good practice to reboot it once a week or so. As it is, we must make
sure there aren't events scheduled before initiating a full shutdown.
Ours is homebuilt, I think I'll check with a friend who has a top of
the line Dell to see if his acts differently.
