How much pollution is associated with generating a KWHR of electricity?

W

William P.N. Smith

Is there a rule of thumb for how much fuel a modern diesel generator
plant (power-plant size, IIRC 2 megawatts) uses to generate (say) a
single KWHR of electricity, and how much pollution (soot, oxides, CO2,
etc) it generates?

I'm thinking of trying to make a case for solar power in a place where
it's currently illegal, and these figures of merit would be very
helpful...

Thanks!

Where is solar power *illegal* for heavens sake ?

Lots of places. Many homeowner's associations consider them
'unsightly', and some countries get significant incomes from the
monopoly power providers. I've found a situation where both apply.
But that's a rathole, and not susceptible to reason, any more than the
proposed wind farms in Buzzard's Bay, MA.

Illegal?

WHY?

Mary

Thanks!

probably the same reason that God's plants are illegal.

Exactly like that, but for a 2MW diesel plant and with fuel
consumption figures, so I can say something like "for every KWHR we
generate with solar, a pint of diesel and this much pollution can be
avoided."

Poke around on the power companies' web sites. Don't know about the fuel
consumption but the pollution stuff seems to be public record. Progress
Energy has a variety of plants - poke around and see what the others use.

FWIW - Florida has a law that prohibits restriction of solar use by
HOA's and other entities. This explicity includes, gasp, that most
evil of devices - the clothesline! I've been thinking of putting one
up just to twang some noses.

LOL!

I wonder what they say about wearing wet clothes after swimming or rain?
