Help with Leappad mains adaptor.

Hi, I wonder if someone can help me. I did a search for Leappad mains adapters' mA, but can't seem to find anything.

I was advised that electrical items can vary as to what sort of milliamps they require. I'm just looking to get something to power my son's Leappad Explorer xmas pressie. It seems that there is a difference between the ones suitable for the Leapster, perhaps they require more power?

Can you damage something like this if you use the wrong ampage, or is it the case that you just need sufficient power?

I'm assuming that 9v 1A is probably correct? I'd quite like to use an adapter for in the car too, and I have one already that came with an energiser AA/AAA battery charger, but I'm not sure what sort of ampage it supports.

On ebay they are asking £10.50 for a compatible mains charger, but can't I just pop down the market and get one for a fiver?
 
The voltage is more important then the amperage rating, but that is not to say amperage is not important. You need a supply that will provide the right voltage with at least the minimum amount of current needed. Having extra current is not going to hurt anything as the device will only draw as much as needed.

The one thing you have to be careful of is cheap supplies will dip in voltage when a large load is attached to them and this could cause problems.

Do you happen to know the exact requirements of the leap pad? Can you do some research and maybe find out?

Generally speaking you want something with the same voltage (or very close) and same or greater current capability.

The adapter needs to have the same type of connector and the same polarity (most are centre (or tip) positive -- It's pretty rare to fin one that's the other way around.)
 
Just to add to the above, polarity of the tip configuration is normally on the edge of the socket on the unit, as already stated dont over volt the unit, and have enough power in amps to power the unit, but do check polarity, as it is rare, but you do get the odd ball manufacturer that uses centre negative, but its rare, but do check, as reverse polarity will end in tears. Hope you find one in time.
