Help with educational material (boost circuits)

I am fairly new to electronics and I was just wondering if someone could point me in the direction of some educational material. My current issue is that i want to boost voltage from a battery to charge a capacitor.

e.g. I know that in disposable camera circuits they charge the capacitor to 300 + volts but only use a small battery at 1.5V. What principles are at work here? I really want to learn more about this.
