Help needed with stereo amp

J

Joe

Hi. Could anyone help me troubleshoot an Akai AM2600 stereo amp (from
the 70's I believe). I recieved it from a friend to see if I could
find the problem, then use it for my turntable setup.

It produces no sound. The watt meter lite comes on, and a red lamp
under the volume control comes on. 3 fuses inside all check okay.

I'm a mechanic, not an electronics repair guy.

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks, Joe

Could be lots of things - regulated power supply issues, a blown channel,
etc.

Mark, thanks for the reply.

I suppose it's like asking me "how do I rebuild the engine in my Jaguar"?
Plus without a schematic....

I didn't want to give up, I thought it might be *fun*.

The techs on this group, myself included, could offer more, but we mostly
don't really have the time to bring you up to speed on semiconductor theory,
how to use a DMM, common amp problems, etc.
That being said - there's lots of resources out there like the
Sci.Electronics.Repair FAQ, and we're always here to answer specific
questions.
Output transistors, if faulty, might be shorted on two or more leads.

Power supply regulator transistors can "open up".

Zener diodes and small caps can short out.

Your problem may fall into one of these areas, but of course it's best to
have a schematic (and the ability to read one) particlarly if you lack
experience.
