Help! 'Deaf' GPS, Magellan Meridian XL

Dear Experts,

Has anyone had reason to repair a Magellan Meridian XL, handheld Global
Positioning System (GPS)?
I have been given one of these and whilst all the menus seem fine it
only ever sees one or two satellites.
The chap that gave it to me, used an external LNA to get it to work.
Any help, circuits, tweeks would be appreciated.
