Finding or making transformers

Hello,

For the last few years I have been meaning to start building some valve guitar amplifiers. I've got schematics worked out and I've found suppliers for all the parts that I need, except for the transformers.

Each amplifier needs:
A Power Transformer: Primary: 240v. Secondary: 6.3v @ 4A & 260 - 0 - 260 @ 400mA (ish).
and
An output transformer (50 Watts, haven't worked out specific specifications yet, I'll get around to it)

Including shipping, these transformers are going to be at least £50 each. The project has a limited budget, and thus I don't want to spend £100 (minimum) on transformers. I would like to start winding my own transformers (I have both the time and the patience), but I cannot find anywhere that will sell EI laminations and bobbins to make my own transformers.

Can anyone help me locate a supplier of EI core laminations (or if not, point me in the direction of cheaper transformers)?

Thanks,

Tom

If nobody here can help you, you may want to head over to www.diyaudio.com. I saw some discussions there about valve amplifier power supplies, and there may be people there who have faced what you're facing.

You might be better off by looking on Ebay for a bargain. I hate to be discouraging but from what I've looked into the prospect of output transformer winding looks overwhelming. For one thing you need to wind onto a bobbin and then assemble the core afterwards and torroids are not suitable. There are a few output transformerless(OTL) designs out there but it appears that they are lower power and use more valves.
You might be able to use a more available transformer for the power supply.
