It's not a problem with sharpness, it's an extremely strong enhancement of contrast that highlights the difference in luminosity caused by the spherical nature of the sun :)

And the morning started off poorly with the Sun rising through cloud.

Before rising further into dense cloud

As everyone was getting quite depressed, the clouds parted just prior to second contact.

And then for totality

Before showing us a nice diamond ring

Then the skies stayed clear until a little before 4th contact.

Because of the lack of time before totality I wasn't able to properly focus my lens :( So the photos are a little disappointing.

But the experience was amazing.

Those are wonderful photographs, Steve.
Congratulations on getting them - it's great that you got your shots - even though for most people on the beaches in Cairns the viewing was a flop.
(All I saw was a few stars poking through the clouds!)

Let us know how the people at the eclipse festivals went? I would be curious to know if they got a good show.

great set of pics Steve :)

it is difficult to focus sharply on such a thin sliver of light
a few of mine were somewhat blurred also

here's a selection of the better ones

And here's a video of the totality.

I had a cheap video camera mounted above my main camera.

Auto-exposure makes it hard to see how dim it got, but I hope you get the idea.

Ahh now as for the experiences of those who attended the festivals - the skies were clear and the only people to miss out were those who slept through it.
However the global enlightenment is taking a little longer than some expected; I fear that the Pleideans may have been delayed. Or perhaps if more people had dropped more acid (hard to imagine) the moment of clarity could have been hallucinated into honest existence.
