Italian 12" porcelain tiles from Lowes. We should have used a darker
grout though, it gets dirty rather quickly because of our large dogs.
Also, while the "distressed look" makes for a great appearance dirt gets
into those little crevices on the tiles and we had to buy a little
machine to clean that.

For my wattmeter I made my own box from wood. Didn't have a lot of money
as a teenager so it wasn't very noble wood. But, numerous applications
of stain and several thin layers of marine lacquer later it looked
really posh. Most of my stuff back then went into such enclosures and
they kind of matched each other. Best of all it still works. It's an old
photo, not very good:

Yeah, white grout is for bathrooms. The only other place I like

Wife says my color vision is barely adequate for resistor codes. OTOH I
am not the guy who has to scrub this stuff, mostly because the tiles
would then most certainly not reach the specified spiffiness level ;-)
