Well, I have an excuse - I encountered the thread in s.e.basics, where
there is, indeed, no such thing as a dumb question - I hadn't noticed
that it was crossposted all over the planet.

Well this and falling for Meatplow's troll makes you seem like a
clueless newbee yourself. Meatplow and Apostrophe Police are Trolls
looking to see in they can get someone upset.

Well I do to and once in a while interact with trolls because of this.
I have had this blow up in my face, as those that troll tend to not be
real clued in. They look for PAHs (hint - P stands for puckered) that
take themselves a little too serious. My dry humor has been misread
and taken by them as "having a live one" on the hook. They call their
troll buddies to flood the group with "dry humor post". Other regulars
of the group and the newbees start getting upset and jumping in to
comment. Things can go to shit very quickly. While the group we are
posting from seems to not attract troll attention, I can't say that
the other groups that we are crossposting to will be the same. From
personal experience, I urge caution. These trolls love attention, any
attention.

And even in s.e.basics, if it's clearly homework, I'd personally answer
with something like "Ask the teacher" or "reread the coursework".

But I don't like to get nasty in s.e.basics. s.e.design, however, is
pretty much a free-for-all. ;-)

RsK had the nerve to write me at home. I answered:

The basic principal that is being applied in this project is that when
a wheel rotates a reflective spot that is attached to the tyre shaft
passes through the sensor, the sensor will then be activated and one
short pulse will be produced for the each revolution of the wheel. So
these pulses will then be amplified and will be given to counter for
counting with the help of a timer circuit, then the output of the
counter will be given to 7 segment display decoder to display.

Well said! Just flesh it out a bit with details about the sensor,
counter, timer and the way the count is converted to display, and you
have your report.
