Dell M992 Monitor Clicking Noise....

My brothers Dell M992 Monitor stopped working 2 weeks
after the warranty ran out!!!

Instead of letting him throw it away, I took a look at it.
I have a little experience in electronics, but I never
troubleshooted a monitor/tv before.

When turning it on, I hear a clicking sound. (Sounds like
someone running their thumb nail down the teeth of a comb.)

I took the back off of the monitor and turned out the lights.
I can see a small diode? (clear glass with some color bands)
arcing (inside its glass) to the clicking noise. The diode is located
in the 7" x 5" metal "box" behind the yolk... On the circuit board
it is marked as SK104.

If anyone has came across this problem and/or can give me some
insight, please respond.

The only piece of test equipment I have at the moment is
a Fluke 179 Multimeter.

There is a failure in the power supply, and or the HV drive, and or the scan
circuits. This is not something for a beginner to troubleshoot. You will
need a lot more than a simple DVM. It takes a lot of experience, and proper
training to service these monitors. Depending on the problem, you will
require the proper instruments to troubleshoot the monitor.

The arcing you see, is not in a diode. It may be a spark gap type device
that is discharging an overvoltage. I would have to see (and possibly the
service manual) it to know what this is. Unfortunately, the manufactures
will not sell the service manual, or any internal replacement parts to non
authorized service centres.

You can bring the monitor to a service centre that is authorized for DELL
monitors for an estimate. It is possible that it may be able to be serviced
for a reasonable cost. There are many safety issues to be concerned with,
when troubleshooting monitors. The voltages and current sources used can
cause serious injury.
