Current Transformers

I am using a current transformer to build a home energy monitor. What I don't understand is when CT sensors clip onto a wire, that is insulated, would the insulation affect the current reading?

No, the current transformer is reacting to the magnetic field around the conductor. Unless the wire is wrapped in an earthed shield it will work.

There are some caveats, but these mostly are that you clip it around the wire you want to measure the current in :)

Beware that an unloaded current transformer can have quite high voltages present on it.

I think I get it now. It is because the magnetic field is a dipole and cannot be insulated but only shielded or redirected.

This stuff always blows my mind.

Thanks,

Dawn.

Well, the magnetic field is a field, but yeah, the rest of it sorta follows.
