I've swapped locations of the 'output' you had, and the 2N2222 .
Modified the picture to show.

If you have it all working right now anyway. I'd love to see a newly drawn schematic of everything you have together.

Here's the fruits of my labour and what's more it works thanks for the suggestion of moving the output location Gryd3 I've inserted a variable resistor (overkill with a 1M variable resistor capped at 1K!!)
