Cloning remote control

I have a universal remote control which has the capability to be cloned to
another identical unit. I was wondering how I might go about cloning it into
my computer as a backup? The remote can be set to send or receive mode, so
If I could receive and send from the computer also, I could save the
settings I have spend hours programming into the remote.

PS: the remote send and receives through IR, not a cable.

You can get a Palm OS-based pocket computer with remote control software, and
store the codes on it. This would look interesting. "Look, he uses a Palm to
control his TV!"

Several companies make IR USB or conventional serial port doodads...and I'm
sure there's several share/freeware packages out there that will let you use
your IRDA port if you have one. Creative had a whole package a while back...

Thanks, I'll check that out.

There is an article in the NUTS AND VOLTS Magazine July 2003 written by a Mr.
Michael Weingarden that is titled Cracking the Easter Egg in Your Universal
Remote. I could not paste into the newsgroup reply. But I will send you the jpg
from some scans I did. Hope this helps.'
