I am planning to install myself but have not ruled the professional option
dependant on price. I live in the west midlands region and have a big 3 bed
semi, I would like to cover all 3 bedrooms, upstairs and downstairs
landing/hallway, and 3 rooms downstairs. An auto dialler would be desirable
but not essential.

From what you have told me I estimate nine zones are required. 8 X PIR and 1
X contact for your entry door.
With this in mind you should be looking at a 16 sector system to allow for
future expansion for panic or garage/shed.
A good system like the Gardtec 816 will cover all your requirements and will
cost around £380.00+VAT, for supply only. You could add at least £200.00 for
a professional to install it.
If you prefer to go for a cheaper option you could try a smaller panel (8
Zone), and not include the bedrooms, just cover the landing. You could then
look at a Eurosec for around £200.00+VAT for supply only.
Hope this helps. let me know if I can be of any more assistance.

How does one arm your described system when they are home?

It is called PART SET
Are there animals in the house?

Not informed of this.
What do you think the rate of false alarms would be with 90% motion sensing
versus one that included perimiter protection of doors and windows, but with
just a couple of strategically placed motion detectors?

In the UK most residential systems rely on mostly motion detection. I
personally agree that a perimeter system is better but in the last 2 years I
haven't installed one.

This was only a price for supply of equipment as specified by the end user.
The price would have to be adjusted if petimmune sensors or such like are
required. This wasn't intended as a proper quotation, only an idea for this
person to evaluate other suppliers.

Paul, regarding the partial arming of the system. Are you providing more
than one keypad?

No, it wasn't asked for, and as I said before this wasn't a quote, only an
idea from which the person could compare prices. I am not supplying anything
to this person unless he asks me to.
if you had a second one upstairs at least the owners would
have option of arming the downstairs motions and the entry door contact (as
well as giving them control and annunciation).

You could still arm downstairs detectors if keypad is situated at the bottom
of the stairs.
If the door contact is the
only functional protection when the system is in the PART SET mode well it
hardly seems worth the effort.

I Agree
In terms of the number of motion detectors im not so sure that is a major
concern as long as they are of good quality, adeqautely powered and proper
installation practices are followed. Contacts while superficially appearing
to simpler and thus more reliable can be subject to problems of their own
such as movement of a building or door.

Movement of frame or door doesn't normally pose too much of a problem. Water
is the main cause for false alarms.
