drugs began to take hold. I remember "K. Jones"
Thanks for the link Grimly, that pretty much covers exactly what I would
like to do. I've bookmarked the site, and it will certainly make the
fabrication of mine much easier!

There's another site which covers the construction of a belt-driven
VW/10kva alternator, but I seem to have mislaid it.

I live across the Niagara River near Buffalo. Your electric rates are
probably 1/2 what mine are and natural gas is much cheaper which
further leads me to question your sanity.

Just for interest sake, I'm looking at my current Hydro bill right now.
It's a little high, we've been doing some energy intensive renovations
lately.
Over 62 days, I used 1097.65 kWh
Here's how my bill reads

Electricity used 1097.65kWh @ 0.04700 $51.59
Delivery 1097.65kWh @ 0.01780 $19.55
Debt retirement 1053.00kWh @ 0.00700 $ 7.37
Local Distribution 1053.00kWh @ 0.00980 $10.32
Local Service chg $31.96

Subtotal $120.79
GST $
8.46

Total Electric charges $129.25

The way I see it, I spent $129.25 for 1097.65kWh.....for a
REAL cost of 11.77 cents per kWh......
I'm pretty sure I can generate electricty myself, cheaper than that
(though that is not the issue!!!!)

Here's one of a direct drive setup, but not much information on it.

I suspect that you don't have any Idea what the real costs of
electrical generation are, but I can tell you for sure that $.12/Kwh is
dirt cheap for diesel generated electricity.

Bruce in alaska who actually generates all his own power with diesel

That may very well be true Bruce, I'm learning quite a bit from these
exchanges.
But again, the diesel generator is intended to be
standby/backup/supplementary, not the
primary generator.

As you obviously have practical experience with this, have you worked out
your
cost per kWh with diesel generation?

Any plus/minuses you'd be willing to share?

My best estimate works out to about 27 cents/kWh., if produced only via
diesel.

and it gets even more expensive if one factors in $2US/Gal fuel costs,
and appreciation on the generators themselves. Plus figure a rebuild
in 30K to 40K hours, and a topend at 15K to 20K hours. Add to that
filters, belts, starters, and other disposables. It ain't cheap.

K. Jones,

I assume that your dollars are Canadian. I believe mine are on the
order of $.20 Canadian per kWh.
