Building a Digital (Security) Camera

Well, I know I can easily build a $150 omni mic for $5 in parts on digi key, the only real difference being aesthetics.

This made me wonder if I could build security cameras for cheap, too. Because decent ones are $300+, each - and that's way out of my price range.

How difficult would it be to do the electronics for a camera?
