I use a fork. I like Thomas' English muffins, but when they toast
they shrink so much they fall back inside the toaster when the
pop-up thing triggers. I tried catching them with a thumb and
forefinger since they initially shoot up about 1/2" to 3/4" when the
pop-up thing triggers, but they're way too hot to hold on to. Then
I tried spearing them but that didn't work too well either so now I
insert a fork downward into the hill-and-valley side. Works
perfect, every time!

Human reflexes aren't actually especially fast.

Probably faster than a rake handle being levered up by a bare foot against
its tines.

Reflexes are "designed" to minimize your injury when you do something
stupid - then again, with enough alcohol, they can get so slow that you
could actually fall down under your own power. ;-)
