Learn how to make your own clean burning diesel fuel alternative and how
to build the processing equipment to make it at home safely

**Saturday, October 15, biodiesel homebrew class, $50:
This is a comprehensive, hands-on workshop on making homebrew biodiesel
fuel out of waste restaurant fryer oil. We'll be looking at the
instructor's mobile biodiesel homebrewing system (identical to what you'd
use to make biodiesel in your backyard), and will make a small batch in
that system.

Most of the class focuses on the chemistry behind biodiesel homebrewing
and quality control, and we'll be doing a lot of 'lab' work making test
batches and variations on different formulas. The feel of the class is a
bit like the mad scientist version of "high school chem lab" (hopefully
without the spitballs and giggling)- you'll be doing hands-on lab
exercises in small groups the entire time, which will teach you how to
make and troubleshoot your home batches- and we'll be learning the
chemistry basics that underlie making good quality fuel for your vehicle.
This is a fast-paced class, and I strongly recommend that you read this
website first: www.biodieselcommunity.org

Most of the class will be indoors but we will occasionally step outside to
the processor trailer. We will have safety equipment for you for the
labwork.

Lunch: Bring a potluck-style lunch dish to share

classes.

**October 16, Sunday, equipment class (sliding scale fee of your choice,
$20-$45) :
This is an optional (and shorter) Biodiesel Equipment Building class to
follow up on the basics you'll learn on Saturday.

We'll be building Appleseed-style biodiesel processors and possibly some
wash tanks. Both pieces of equipment are documented at
www.biodieselcommunity.org/appleseedprocessor and
www.biodieselcommunity.org/standpipewashtank .

You can build a system at the class to take home, or can just come and
watch.

Parts and cost for those wishing to take a processor home:

-We can build you a processor and/or a wash tank (if you can bring a
barrel), and we will discuss heat exchangers, methanol recovery,
vacuum-assist for dewatering and methanol recovery, and other equipment
topics.

-Students who wish to take a system home need to pay for parts ahead of
time, and to provide their own tanks. The tanks needed are a. an electric
water heater- new or used- and b. a 55-gallon, preferably metal, drum for
a wash tank. I'm not from Seattle, so I can't suggest any specific sources
for any of these. "Metal recyclers" in the phone book might be a place to
start to look for barrel/drum searches, and plumbers often have old water
heaters that they've removed from jobsites which they can give to you.
Some town dumps will let you haul appliances away. Craigslist may have
water heaters listed, and the "Northwest Regional Biodiesel" discussion
forum at forums.biodieselnow.com may be a place to ask for one.
You can also buy a new water heater for about $225. They must be electric,
not gas models... We can test used ones for leaks before building the
processors.

-I will be picking up the pump and plumbing parts for those who pre-pay
for equipment by Thursday Oct 13. This is the best way to ensure we'll
have everything at the workshop and that everyone doesnt' make a rush on
the same Home Depot.

The plumbing for a processor costs about $200 (I'll refund any
difference), paid to me by October 13th (you can use Paypal.com to send it
to my account: [email protected], or you can send me a check to
Maria Alovert po box 2994 berkeley ca 94702).

Please read the Appleseed processor web page for more info about the
system. If you can't find an electric water heater, you can also build
just the plumbing assemblies and wire the pump, and later attach it onto
your own water heater or other tank- I'll be bringing a couple of pipe
vices so we can work without your tank being present.

Alternately, you could order an Appleseed processor parts kit (any one
that they offer) from www.biodieselwarehouse.com, www.b100supply.com, or
www.utahbiodieselsupply.com, but it's possible that these businesses are
back ordered at this time.

You can also try and buy the parts yourself at local hardware stores-
you'll need to go to Harbor Freight Tools for the pump (and valves) and to
hardware stores (I recommend Lowes rather than Home Depot) for the
plumbing. If you can't find everything, I of course can't guarantee that
we'll finish your system in Sunday's session, but I"ll try and bring a few
extra 'specialty' plumbing items. Please use the parts list at the
www.biodieselcommunity.org/appleseedprocessor or
www.biodieselcommunity.org/standpipewashtank pages.

If you would like to build a system, please do the following:

a. contact [email protected] , and let me know if you want me
to pick up parts for you and how you'll be paying for them

b. Send me money for plumbing- $200: please use PayPal and my paypal.com
account: [email protected] . This buys you processor/wash tank
parts.

c. Bring an electric water heater and a barrel if possible.

d. If you can't carry big tanks in your vehicle, you have the option to
build just the plumbing assemblies/wire the pump, and to finish the system
at your home later. You'll be shown how to wire the heater itself at the
workshop.

Lunch: we wont' be taking a full lunch break, but the class will be
informal with some inevitable 'standing around' during the build. Please
bring some snack food to share- chips, juice, pastries, etc.

Directions: Google Maps link:
http://maps.google.com/maps?oi=map&q=218+10th+Ave,+Seattle,+WA+98122

Registration: send me an email to [email protected], or just
show up for the Sunday session (please preregister for the Saturday class
though). Note the class times and locations are different for the two
days.

Thanks to Lyle Rudensey, the Northwest Biofuels Network, and Chris Goodwin
of Frybrid Conversions for arranging these classes!
