For just schematics I really like ExpressPCB. But for PBCs, you
are locked into their board service. Still not bad.

Depends on what you want to do with them. Schematic entry for PCB layout has to
be integrated with the layout software.

If it's just for presentation/discussion/breadboarding, LT Spice is OK, and lets
you simulate, too.

Well, you could just set up a camera which would locate the DEDs, but if one
of a string was open, the entire string would be dead.

It should be simple enough to detect the loss of current if one of a string
opened, or the voltage difference when one shorted.

You could attach two LEDs in series across each LED in the matrix, so if an
LED opened, the two LEDs would light instead.

It might be possible to use TDR
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time-domain_reflectometer) to locate the open
or shorted LED by its signature on the return pulse waveform which should
differ from the normal LED, and the time will locate the offending device.

Though I expect a challenge from Larkin, he'll claim he already
invented it when he was quite young and was not astonished >:-}

It takes something truly remarkable these days to elicit astonishment, or to
obtain a patent. Most patents seem to be granted because of the applicant's
skill at technological obfuscation along with the patent examiner's lack of
comprehension or expertise in highly specialized and complex niches of
technology.

I like LTspice for schematics. And the Mentor Graphics PADS suite for PCBs
as well as overall assemblies. I print the schematics to PDF and convert
them to JPG or PNG format for presentation in a universally readable format,
