Batteries, diodes, & burn times

Knowing nothing of electronics, I would like to know if you were wire two AAA batteries thru a cheap diode how long would this last before depleting the batteries?

Sorry that is to wire two AAA batteries thru a cheap diode.

depends which way around the diode is connected

one way it would be an open cct and no current flowing
the other way, a short cct and full current flowing and the diode is likely to die very quickly in a puff of smoke
