An1017A application note microchip

The AN1017A application note is the sinusoidal control of BLDC motors. I am implementing it but i have few questions. The source code provided for that refers to two terms phaseoffsetCW and phaseoffsetCCW. I am confused with this. The document says this is added for symmetry of sine wave can someone please explain me this?
 
Looks like you have to adjust the phase of the driving waveform to maintain maximum current flow in the windings as the speed increases (lag caused by inductive loading) - this is the offset value (in clockwise and counterclockwise directions).
