12V DC Power source for prototyping

Hi, would like to here some thoughts on using a power source. I am needing 12 VDC source for some of my prototyping. I have an old desktop pc that I am stripping parts from and decided to pull the power supply. I just wanted to make sure I am going about this the correct way in getting the 12V power. From my research ( model number nps-160cb-1 ) this is very similar to http://www.atxpowersupplies.com/300-watt-power-supply-fsp-atx-300-gu.php

I assume the ATX 20 pin will be a good source for the 12 V DC. A pin guide is seen here http://pinouts.ru/Power/atxpower_pinout.shtml

Anyway, I just want to make sure this is correct way on being resourceful and recycling :)

thanks

Many switching power supplies, and ATX supplies in particular, need a minimum load on one output (usually the 5V) to stabilize the magnetics for the other outputs. 10% of the full rated output for that voltage is typical. So if the supply is rated for 5V at 50 A, you need a 5 A load before the 12V output will be stable. Some supplies are better than others, but don't be surprised if the +12 is acting strangely.
