with groups in English. Much easier user interface (newsreader) than via
a web portal.

This guy is always spamming those newsgroups, too. I'd much rather keep
to a forum that Cadsoft actually reads.

Commendable.

But, Joerg is right on the money when he says "Much easier user interface
(newsreader) than via a web portal." I no longer participate in Yahoo groups
because of the sponsor interrupts and the fact that it is slow (I have a
dial-up connection).

What kind of viruses? I never had one come through. I guess that depends
on the reader and possibly the browser if you open suggested links. And
maybe the firewall which in our case is HW based.

What is nice about a web based forum is the chance to share files,
schematics and other stuff in an orderly and organized fashion. But it
just ain't as user friendly as usenet. And in the case of Cadsoft they
complement their newsgroups nicely with web space on their site to share
libraries and other stuff. For me that is really all I need.

Yahoo groups are full of advertising (which can admittedly be blocked),
can't be read offline and are much harder to archive locally. Plus
there is no guarantee that Yahoo won't say, tomorrow, "All groups now
cost $50 per month to maintain". Or maybe they will just discontinue
the service. All that material will disappear forever.

I'm very down on proprietary services that don't add VERY SIGNIFICANT
functionality to open solutions.

Real USENET articles are 100% ASCII - no attachments allowed.
The supposed "improvement" that allows some newsreaders to send
or receive attachments is Evil.

Real USENET articles "attach" files by referencing a web page by
WWW or FTP URL, because Real web pages *can* include files.
If you follow such a link, whether you get infected depends on
the virus resitance of your web browser and operating system,
not your newsreader. Which is exactly the case as with web-based
user groups taht contain URLs.

The issue is whether you are choosing wisely.

Choosing a web-based service with ads run by a big corporation
instead of a speedy, reliable and crash-proof system run by
nobody is *not* a wise decision.

Enough companies use it as their ECAD tool
to keep CadSoft in business.
While many ECAD packages have fallen by the wayside,
becoming abandonware, EAGLE is still prosperous.
They must be doing something right.

While many criticize the irregular interface,
the bang-for-the-buck is there.

What got me was certain "weirdities". I HATED the automatic pad generation
on parts.

However, I have not used it in a couple years, perhaps it has grown up.
