Wireless Security System Advice / Recommendations

L

Leigh Riley

I wonder if you anyone can provide me with a couple of suggestions as to
a WIRELESS home (apartment) security system? I've had a look about the
web-site, and there seems to be lot to choose from. I'm not looking for
anything super-expensive (something under $300 would be nice).

I'm living in an apartment with one very large living room with 3 entry
points (1 door, one sliding glass door, and a window), and 3 bedrooms
each with one window. I was thinking of the following setup:

Living Room:
1 Door/Window Contact for the front door
1 Door/Window Contact for the patio door
1 Motion detector focusing around the expensive A/V equipment and the window

3 Bedrooms:
One Door/Window Contact on each window

Additional:
I'm guessing I need a reciver too, and a siren (assuming that it doesn't
have one built in). Call me picky, but I also quite fancy having two
strobe lights (one blue & one red) near my equipment (a) for cosmetics,
and (b) to further scare any would-be intruder.

I don't know how all of these components interact, and whether or not
they are universally compatible i.e. motion detector from Vendor A being
used with the receiver from Vendor B.

My ideal setup would be the receiver in a cupboard connected
(wirelessly) to 5 door/window contacts, a motion sensor, which will set
off a sirean and two strobe lights when it detects something.

Any suggestions?

Thanks very much in advance!!

I have this (Visonic Powermax) and like it:

You do need to be somewhat technically adept to make it work, but it is not
difficult. You just have to be able to read and understand. I highly
recommend that you click on "details" and read the three manuals you can
download (users guide, programmers guide, and installers guide). These will
tell you exactly what capabilities it has and you can decide if it meets
your needs. It isn't quite going to make your price cut off, but it is
within about $20 without the flashing strobe lights.

If you want to spend even less, go to x10.com and look at their Protector
Plus system. Once you figure out how to get to the manuals and read about
it, check their web site weekly for sales. You can pickup the basic system
for $65 on sale. Additional door/window transmitters and motion detectors
are also on sale less frequently in 2 for 1 deals. I haven't used this
system and its not as good as a "real" alarm, but it costs significantly
less.

If you like the powermax, you may still want to visit X10.com for the
automation equipment. The powermax can control things like lights via the
X10 protocol. You'll just have to buy the strobe lights, the X10 light or
appliance modules, and a PL513 X10 interface for the powermax.

how about Ademco ? (www.Ademco.com)

Vista 10 Pack, with 6128RF Keypad (instead of 6128)
5 5816 Wireless TX
1 5890 Wireless Motion

Indoor Siren comes in Pack.
Receiver is built in RF Keypad.

30 Watt Siren, Strobe Lights, are cheap.

Probably run you around $400+ depending on where you buy it from.
