Tune in to the ABC tonight to see the efforts of GetUp members in the campaign against internet filtering.
At 8.30pm, Four Corners covers the campaign and at 9.35pm, Q&A explores internet censorship,
featuring former GetUp National Director, Brett Solomon.

Thanks to your efforts and huge grassroots opposition, the Government has finally blinked on
internet filtering. Reports suggest that their plan to censor the internet has been shelved until
after the election.

The campaign isn't over yet, but we've put together this action-packed video to thank you for
your efforts so far. GetUp members have emailed their MPs, inundated the Minister with questions
in Parliament and on TV, signed our largest petition and chipped in over $100,000 for a massive
advertising campaign. Together, we've exposed the futility behind the Rudd Government's
censorship agenda. Click here to check out the video and share it with your friends.

Following Four Corners, the panel on Q&A will look at the future of the Internet.

The panel this week is
Brendan O’Connor (Minister for Home Affairs),
Sophie Mirabella (Shadow Minister for Innovation),
Kaiser Kuo (Beijing-based internet consultant),
Brett Solomon (Internet activist), and Helen Razer (broadcaster and commentator).

If you want to ask a question about the Internet filter,
you can do so here> http://www.abc.net.au/tv/qanda/ask.htm

If you support the right for people to access anything on the internet

disable your firewalls and antivirus NOW.

Why would a responsible person do that?

Responsible people are able to take action on "net nasties" without the central committee
deeming certain sites are off limits to the proletariat.

If anyone is involved in illegal activity, the law is going to catch up with them sooner or later.

We live in a *free society*, not North Korea.

Why does Rudd defy intelligence in everything he does?

I'm concerned that anything that can be called illegal will be targeted,
mainly to do with copyright.

H

Hunter

It won't affect peer to peer file sharing.

Conroy was asked about this specifically and just blubbed his way
through the answer.

Actually p2p was one of his specific targets.

**- Australia has been known to have high levels of censorship. It
should come as no surprise to those in the land down under that the
government is planning to filter P2P and Bit Torrent traffic in live
pilot tests.

Senator Conroy went on the record saying "technology that filters
peer-to-peer and Bit Torrent traffic does exist and it is anticipated
that the effectiveness of this will be tested in the live pilot trial".

It is a drastic step to filter out all P2P and Bit Torrent traffic as it
assumes that those channels are only used for piracy. One example of
legitimate use is the popular online game World of Warcraft. This game
uses a Bit Torrent system of distrubution for its updates. Like any
technology it can be used for both good and evil and choosing to block
all on the account that it is only used for piracy is taking censorship
to new levels.

Unsurprisingly the idea has fueled a serious debate in Australia; "I'm
aware that this proposal has attracted significant debate and criticism
? on this blog and at other places in the blogosphere," Senator Conroy
said. Many of the complaints stem around the idea that Senator Conroy is
acting as a big brother.

If the Senator has his way and the filter is kept in place how far will
the government be allowed to intervene? Simply blocking a technology for
the potential illegal use is a preposterous idea as nearly all software
can be used for malicious activities; it's the user who makes the
decision. -**

He is lying when he says it will provide some manner of protection, he
also knows he is lying. You really have to wonder what it is that is
motivating him besides getting the religious right to support Labor at
the federal election.

Either he know and he should be sacked for being a duplicitous fucktard,
or he doesn't know and should be sacked for being entirely incompetent
and unqualified for the position he holds.

I was thinking of web sites.
The Church of Scientology for one will leap on any kind of copyright
restrictions. They already convinced the government over the hackneyed
and hypocritical, especially for them, and misleading argument of
freedom of religion.

LOL, maybe they will bring in legislation so you need a special
Government licence to encrypt data on the simple pretense that if you
have something to hide then you must be a criminal!

H

I'm afraid you protesteth too much.

Why don't you boys look elsewhere for your wank fodder.

But stooge, today we saw a beautiful example of what rudd SHOULD be
spending the money on. A bunch of your mates were rounded up and
arrested, with many more arrests to come. Your ploy to push for
filtering that you know you can get around is coming unstuck I'm afraid,
the people are waking up to your evasion tactics, and I think you'll
find they fully support the idea of putting the money into law
enforcement to spring more of your mob like happened over here in WA
today, and I for one look forward to it! Roll on the death of the failed
filter, and all that money going into the arrest of your friends instead!
