many cheap DVD players (x-logic - ctech - XMS) can be made VCR friendly
simply by entering a pass code as the setup menu, it opens a new meny with
region and macromedia settings - had to learn this cause i was setting up a
entertainment system where the tele had no AV in, so used the inputs on a
hi-fi VCR - add the code and i could watch and tape dvd movies - in stereo

www.dvdrhelp.com is your friend.

I have a cheap Ctech DVD player and I have the same set up as you.
I can copy a DVD to VCR and I did not need to enter any codes.
