Wanted: Service Manual/Info on Sony KV-20XBR TV

D

Don Allen

I need a copy of the OEM Sony Service Manual or Service Info, or a copy
of the Sams Photfacts, Sony KV-20XBR (circa 1985/1986) TV. Neither Sony
or Sams still stock the service information due to the age factor, thus
I'm out of luck regarding acquisition of this information from the
normal sources.

Most specifically, I am looking for a set of schematics, and the info
relating to convergence and geometry setup.

Thanks,

Hi Don,

The convergence set-up of this set is exactly the same as the KV25XBR, in
case you can find the info for that model. There are many things that are
the same in these two models, except for the size of the chassis assembly,
the CRT, and some of the options circuits.

If you remove the rear cover, on the scan board are some pots for the pin
and convergence set-up. They should normally be labelled to what they do.
These are normally factory set, and hardly ever need touching, even after a
new CRT would be installed. They are very tricky to mess with, but we've had
to do it at the factory service level.

You may find that you will have to do the corners with slip or edge magnets
that slip between the CRT neck and the yoke windings. These magnets are
available from any of the TV manufacture parts departments. They are very
common. You will see them on the back wall of the CRT when you open the
cover. They look like plastic strips. You may also see some button magnets
glued to the tube. These are for a combination of the purity and pin set-up.

If you are not experienced at this, it is very easy to really screw this up.
Also, I would guess you have a grating generator to use for the convergence
reference. I have seen many independent techs touch the convergence set-up
on this series of set, and have to come to the Sony service centre to get it
back. Sony used to give seminars to their authorized services on how to set
these sets up.

In your model of set, do an ESR test on all the caps on the scan board,
especially in the convergence circuit, horiz gen, and in the pin amp
sections before touching any adjustments. These caps tend to cause problems
in these sets. If you do not want to buy an ESR meter, it would be best to
try the caps for testing them.

I am sort of surprised that Sams does not have these schematics. It has been
over 15 years since I ever worked on this model! Several years ago, I was
able to buy a schematic for a similar set for a client. I do not have a copy
of this one.

I called around myself to see if I can find a service manual for this set.
Everyone I know who is, and was doing Sony service no longer has any copies.
Sony also has no more of these. Infact, they told me that they don't even
carry any more parts for this set. I am looking for the battery cover for an
ICF2002 Sony radio. This is for myself, and at the same time, I asked about
this manual. They used to sell the manual for $40.00. The last time Sony had
one in stock was about 10 years ago. It is about the same for my radio!

The KV-2011CR is basically the same set, but was marketed more as a
computer display than a TV.

There really isn't anything special about adjusting the convergence
and geometry on this set. The instructions for just about any Sony TV
will tell you what you need to know. The first thing to check is that
the yoke is firmly held in place. The rubber wedges that hold it in
position tend to work loose over the years allowing the bell of the
yoke to droop down causing poor edge convergence. Try gently pulling
up on the front of the yoke. If things get better, you should push
the bottom wedges in and fix them in place with silicone rubber. Look
for any plastic strips going under the yoke. These touch up the
corner convergence and can move out of position, or may not have been
properly positioned in the first place. "H.STAT" on the CRT socket
board adjusts the red and blue horizontally. The geometry adjustments
are all labeled and will function like the ones on a computer monitor.

That is a 20" set. There is NO convergence or geometry beyond
vertical size/linearity. Sony might have included a horizontal size.
That set will have an H-STAT control that will tilt the red/blue in
the vertical plane.

ALL the rest of the convergence has to be performed by manual
adjustment of the yoke, yoke rings, and bi-metallic strips inserted
between the yoke and the tube. Not something that can be learned out
of a book or manual, you need someone with lots of experience doing
the Sony sets behind you while you adjust your first SEVERAL.
