USB HUB Question

USB hubs allow you to transfer data and power/charge devices. Do they have an IC organizing data and sending to your computer or do they just plug the device directly into your computer and somehow avoid data collisions?
I'm thinking about making one and I was wondering if I needed to find an IC.

They have onboard IC for routing data between the ports
