UPDATE: Hard Disk Drive Controller Error Message

B

Brad

Hi,

I have a Quantum "Fireball" 1.2GB HDD that went
bad. I got a message regarding a problem with the
"controller". I swapped the controller (same controller)
from a similar HDD and I still get the same message.

Update: (I forgot) The error message is,
"1782 - Disk Controller Failure".

I am trying to recover some files on the HDD. Could
a hardware fault cause a controller error message?

Thanks in advance, Brad

Before you type your password, credit card number, etc.,
be sure there is no active key logger (spyware) in your PC.

Assuming the ATA interface in your PC is OK, given the age of the drive it
sounds like a fault in the HDA, maybe bad heads, failed head amp, head
crash, failed motor bearings etc. If you changed the PCB and the fault's
still there you've done all you reasonably can. You aren't going to get the
files back, and unless the files are worth the cost of data recovery, I'd
dispose of the drive and move on.

You can try the old trick of putting the drive in the freezer overnight in
an *airtight* bag (very important) then quickly powering it up while it's
still ice cold and see if you can get anywhere with it, but I doubt it will
help.

can you hear the disc spinning up when you power it on....

if not,, jerk the unit in a circular motion back and forth right
after you power it on and see if you can break the static friction and
get the disc to spin up.

If so , get your data off ASAP.
