Transil diode Substitution

T

Tim

Well after having done some research I find that the item I am looking to
replace is called a Transil diode from ST (part # SMBJ12A-TR). My
question is this; can I sub a regular 12 V Zener diode in the circuit?

It seems to be providing protection from overvoltage on a HD controller
board. I tried to source from the usual suppliers for the proper part,
but they want you to but thousands of 'em at a time. I need only 1 of
course.

Any input is greatly appreciated.

Thanks In Advance,

Hi Tim,

That part is a uni-directional 600 watt 12v transient voltage suppressor.
You can pick up one through Digi-Key. They will not be Transil brand, but
just as effective.

Digi-Key part number for Littlefuse brand TVS of same spec is P6KE12ACCCT-ND
($0.37/ea). Better hurry. They only have 9684 of 'em left !^)

Hope that helps.

Hi Tim,

The coffee is finally starting to take effect now.

The part you need is surface mount (DO-214AA package) and I gave you the
part number for a DO-15 package. My bad!

The surface mount package is Littlefuse part number SMBJ12A. Digi-Key part
number is SMBJ12ACCCT-ND. What a coincidence on the part number !^)

Thanks, I'll try Digikey again with that substitute you mentioned. I
tried with the Transil part number and they want to sell a reel of 'em to
me.
