Test Audio Amp

G

gene ohara

Would like to be able to quickly and easily test various output
semiconductors and other critical components so am thinking of
building an audio amp with sockets for these components.

Appreciate any suggestions, especially by someone who has already
done something like this.

Thanks

A curve tracer won't work?

A couple of suggestions: If you test in-circuit, by mock-up, be
sure to have a full set of known good components, or either a
dedicated jig per part to be tested. IOW, test one thing at a
time.

2. A curve tracer can do wonders for semiconductors, and can actually
give useful information for passive components (like, you can see the
phase shift from Ls and Cs and stuff, you can see the Zener knee, it'll
even do ordinary diodes.)

In any case, Keep It Simple. IOW, I wouldn't recommend adapting
a production-type amp to be a test bed - I'd build something from
scratch, where I know exactly what each component is and etc. etc.

Good Luck!

Using a 'hifi' amp design, with lots of feedback, would not be a good idea
because the feedback will obscure any variations in the characteristics of
the devices. Any testing should be done outside a feedback loop if you want
to maximise the sensitivity of your testing.

Thanks everyone for your input.

Forgot to mention am not trying to break new ground in audio amp
design but only want to find out how subsitution of cross referenced
components affect the amps's performance.

Would keep one channel stock and only change one thing at a time with
the other channel.

Hopefully someone else has already done this.
