SPDT 5-Pin Relay

Hello all,

Very new to electronics and I purchased some relays the other day. Upon receiving them, I was a bit confused by the placement of the 5th pin (COM). It falls between two holes on a PCB and also could not be inserted into a breadboard. Is this normal for this type of relay (http://www.taydaelectronics.com/mini-relay-spdt-5-pins-6vdc-10a-120v-contact.html)?

I had to drill a hole in my PCB to be able to mount it and had to use wires with alligator clips to be able to test it on a breadboard. Would anyone recommend a particular relay (SPST/SPDT) that you had no problem mounting?

Thanks,

James

If you want to insure that the relay you buy will match a breadboard pattern you should look for DIP (Dual In-line Package) or SIP (Single In-line Package) footprint relays.

Hi James, and welcome to the Electronics Point forums :)

The TE Connectivity V23079 relay series has all pins on a 0.1" grid and is available in a good range of voltages and configurations. And it's one of the cheapest available from Digikey.

Digikey have 31 variants in stock; seven of these are THT (through-hole technology). (The other 24 are surface-mount technology, SMT.)

Thank you for the responses Kris and CDrive. I guess that saying about when you assume things really applies here, huh? :)

Thanks CDrive, I'll pay more attention to the DIP/SIP specification on my next purchase.

Thank you for turning me on to the V20379 line of relays Kris! I'll definitely use those on my next purchase.

Glad I found this forum!
