Sourcing hall effect current sensor from Honeywell Sensing and Control

I've managed to find a really nice hall-effect type linear current sensor package from Honeywell Sensing and Control.

Its the CS series and has the hall-effect sensor embedded into a ring-concentrator, all in a nice package.

Trouble is - I'm having trouble finding anywhere that can get me one.

Digikey have one model from the range for $21 - the CSLA2CD, but unfortunately it's not the CSLA2EN one I'm after. They have none available anyway.

RAMELEC can't get me any for 3 weeks and they want a whopping $190 each!! If I am prepared to wait 10 weeks and order 50 then I can have them for a more reasonable $31 each. Thanks for nothing RAMELEC!

Does anyone have any tips on where else I might try?

Digikey seem to have a number of models in stock for $70 to $200.

This is the cheapest (they have several for this price).

I have seen them made by cutting a toroid core in two and placing a linear hall effect sensor in the gap. Something like this.

There are also ICs that have pretty much everything on-board. Like this.

Thanks Steve - actually, we've been doing a bit of work previously with the Allegro A1360 and with some ring concentrators made from 1010 and 1020 metals. We've been trying to measure currents up to 1000A.

We've managed to measure up to 600A with this setup. Unfortunately the metal has horrible hysteresis, hence we probably have to get the ring made out of a Mu Metal instead to get decent behaviour. Getting hold of Mu metals and machining them has proven to be a bit of a stumbling block for us.

Then we came across the Honeywell CSLA2EN which can measure currents up to 950A. So, we thought we'd order in a couple and play about with them and see how they perform.

I've just ordered some a few minutes ago from www.onlinecomponents.com and they were only $60 each.

BTW - how's the weather over there in Perth? Has all our QLD rain reached you yet?

If only it was that simple. There has been enough rain here in the last 12 month to keep Perth going for the next 5 years.
