Sony Watchman FD-42A - No power after connecting to generic 6V adapter

Help! Please let me know if the above is fixable. I plugged in a Sony
Watchman FD-42A (same body style as the "RainMan" and Sports Watchman) to
a non-Sony 6V AC adapter. Power did not come on and I quickly noticed a
burning plastic smell and hot spot on the back. Immediately unplugged
(was plugged in no more than 10 seconds), and removed the back. I cannot
see below the circuit board, except that the on switch is making contact.
Would this be a blown tube, and is it fixable without spending a fortune?
Anyone know where to get parts? I realize its a 1987 set, but it was a
great little TV and I hate to lose it. Thanks.

It certainly wouldn't blow the tube, but it did fry something, probably in
the power supply. I'm assuming you didn't bother to check the polarity of
the adapter to make sure it matched that required by the set. If you're
lucky it has a protection diode that took the hit, no way of knowing without
getting in there though.

What a quick reply---thanks!. No, I didn't realize the polarity issue
until after the fact. It was the first time I tried an adapter, usually
it's powered by C batteries, as its just used outdoors and during power
outages. Now it will not work with the batteries. I was just curous
about what to look for in order to determine if it can be fixed.
