Sony ccd tr-420e Camera

plays back fine, tape door opens and closes properly. Only problem, can't
record because there is no picture. The zoom moves the lense as it should.
Connected it to my vcr and playback is good, with audio. Could this be that
the ccd unit is cactus? if so would it be possible to get a replacement as I
am not sure how old this model is. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

CCDs fail very rarely. I would expect a faulty capacitor.
If you want it repaired -- take it to repair shop.
If you want it ruined -- try to repair yourself.
