Sony car head unit flashes but won't power on

Sony XR-C750 head unit (AM/FM/cassette).

The unit won't power on. When I press the power button, it tries to come to
life; once a second the display flashes to life (dimly) and goes off again.

Is this a common problem with that era Sony's (c.1997-8)?

I've got a factory service manual (a marginal photocopy of one, anyway).

Any suggestions where to begin?
