Problem: Apex AD-1201 DVD player loads DVD but fails to play DVD
Symptoms/methology/fix:
After little over a year the APEX AD-1201 dvd
player which I purchased 2 xmas ago failed to
see any DVD or Audio CD that was inserted into
it. The power light worked and the player
disc tray mechanism properly loaded the disks.
Also the video output displayed a properly the
blue screen used when there was no disk in the
player. When the disc is inserted the the player
displays the message "Disc loading" and one
could hear the motor spinning. However, after
spinning for about 60 seconds the motor stops
spinning and the video displays the message
"No disc." The disk was properly inserted, and
testing with multiple DVDs/Audio CD convince
me that the Disk was not the trouble. I tried
several times to clean the DVD player with a
Audio-CD cleaning kit - but it did not help the
dvd see the disc after loading. At this point
I open the DVD player and while it wasn't
something I'd do again or advise others to do
-I glanced briefly sideways to check the red
lo power laser to determine it was still
powered up and working -which it was. So I
thought that the problem of not playing the
DVD was not due to the laser itself. Then,
I noticed that this player had a sensor near
the disk spindle mounted on a small rectangular
board. Thinking that the sensor failure might
prevent the player from recognizing the disc
I decide to clean it. Because the sensor is
so far inside the disc loading mechanism and
difficult to reach I tried spraying the
spindle sensor with a can of compressed air.
After several blast of air, the DVD starting
seeing and playing DVDs and Audio CDs.
