is there any software around to build a basic circuit on screen and test the
results rather than physically building a circuit.

i.e create circuit with opamp, and see the change in the output by varying
the resistors in the circuits etc.

Some Spice variant would do that. Some are free, some are so expensive
only serious professionals or those with a kidney to sell need apply.
LTSpice should do what you want for nowt:

Crocodile Technology is my favourite.

It does have some limitations, but I find it very useful. It is only a 30
day trial download, but I just set my computer clock back in time whenever I
need it.

Don't download the free version of Crocodile Clips. It's too basic.

One that IMO is easier to use than the (albeit very good) Linear one is
Circuitmaker Student freeware.

Beware of Livewire, it's cheap and pretty but many of the spice models are
incorrect (eg, their LM324 won't swing low enough to turn a transistor off).

Sure, I have a few complaints on LTSpices's GUI, but comparing LTSpice
with Circuit Maker is a no contest. Circuit Maker is completely
unusable...in my opinion...

Secondly, the demo vestion of SS has *all* features, and if you use the
demos ability to have one level of hierarchy, you can get 30 top level
blocks, where each block is a schematic with 25 real components
totalling 30*25 = 750 real components. This is way larger than any demo
or student version of any of the paid for commercial spices.
