Smoke Alarm / Heat Dector Questions

S

Sheldon

Hi,

My house has 3 hard wired smoke detectors, BRK 1839WM. The house is about
10 years old. I was going to replace them, however, the house also has 2
wire Edwards Signaling heat detectors, model 283B, in the garage. As far
as I can determine the heat detectors do not an audio alarm. Thus they must
be connected to the smoke detectors, but how? What are their 2 wires
connected to? Will the new ones work with this system?

thanks in advance,

Sheldon

Hi Sheldon:

You'll need Firex 428 smoke alarms to interface with your Edwards heat
detectors. Hook them up exactly the same way your current smokes are
connected. The 428's are used to interface with heat detectors (normally
open contacts) and residential sprinkler flow switches. Shorting the
interconnect to the neutral will cause them all to sound the alarm. We use
428's in many group homes that have these same devices. You must replace
every smoke alarm with the same type. You can't mix brands or models.

Thanks,

The spec for the Firex 428 does not look any different than any other smoke
alarm That is, "only attach it to Firex products" that have 3 wires (hot,
neutral, and interconnect). AM I missing something?

The 428's use an orange interconnect wire. The 406's and 484's use yellow.
You *can* mix smoke alarms together as long as they have the same
interconnect lead colors (in the case of Firex smokes at least). The
installation guide for the 428 specifically states you can't use them with
406/484's or you could damage the units. You also have to watch how many
you hook together.
