I wonder does anyone know how these slave dimmer switches work?

OK, so I get that the actual dimmer is in the master and that the slaves just send some kind of signal to the master, but I'd like to use just the Slave switches in a home automation system with my own homebrew device at the end of the line reacting to touches on the slave switches.
So my question is can anyone give this electronics noob some pointers on how these slaves work and how I might interface to them?
