SIM Card Holder Question

Good mornig,
I've googled the subject and have read through a couple of patents that showed up as well as Telit's app note, 80000NT10001a, HE-910 Hardware design guide, and Telit's software user guide 1vv0300784 and am not finding the answer. I understand that the SIM presence switch is CMOS and that when the holder is closed the trace is pulled to ground but what affect is it intended to have on the system? Is it simply there to indicate that a SIM card is present or is it intended to arrest any functions of the module if the switch is open?

As there are SIM card holders without presence switch, this seems not to be a mandatory property of the SIM card holder. Therefore I guess you can use it to whatever purpose seems right to you.
